Jekyll: Setup a simple Blog

In the past, most of the blogs I installed were based on Wordpress and a large number of plugins. As any dynamic website always brings in different problems and risks (CVEs for Wordpress), I decided to go for a static website instead.

Jekyll is a Ruby based tool which converts different templating languages (e.g. Markdown) into html. Probably you already know it as the engine running Github Pages

You need Ruby and Rubygems installed. Afterwards you can install jekyll and some additional software:

gem install jekyll bundler jekyll-feed minima sass

There is a good Quick-start guide available on Jekylls Website: Quickstart Jekyll.

jekyll new myblog
cd myblog
jekyll serve

Now you can browse to http://localhost:4000.
